Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert to March on Washington — looks like I’m going to DC in October

On last night’s episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart announced that he will hold the Rally to Restore Sanity on the Washington Mall on October 30, as a counter to the crazy people dominating our national politics. (See the website here.) The gathering, which Stewart referred to as the Million Moderate March, is intended to “spread the timeless message, ‘Take it down a notch for America … ‘” In response, Stephen Colbert announced his plan to hold a competing rally on the same day, the March to Keep Fear Alive. (See the website here.) Stewart was vague about the specifics of the events — there will likely be comedians — but said it would be “two or three hours one Saturday for some nice people to get together for some fun.” After the jump, watch both Stewart’s and Colbert’s announcements.

Naturally, this is linked to all over the place this morning:

• NPR: NPR with a more or less straight news piece about it.

• The Atlantic with a roundup of what other news sites & bloggers are saying.

• James Poniewozik (TIME) with analysis.

Et cetera.

Ya know, I wanted to take a trip to DC at some point anyway, this might be just the excuse to go down there for Halloween…
