I, Cringely » Fallon’s Getting a Dell!
We’re up to three hours on the phone with Dell Tech Support four chat sessions, and nine FedEx shipments so far.  If everything goes perfectly from here on out the total will be 10 FedEx shipments, but there could be more. The Dell people have been uniformly helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind. I just wonder what the profit picture is for Dell on these $199 systems? via cringely.com ...

Sustainable Aliens: A New Theory On Why E.T....
People who think about extraterrestrial life have been bothered for a long time by a rather obvious fact: There isn’t any here. This is sometimes called the Fermi Paradox. It’s an old conundrum (which may have started with physicist Enrico Fermi) that asks “If space-traveling ETs exist, why aren’t they with us already?” The idea is simple. Start with a...

Started by Fixer Blackmoore, “Thomas however wasn’t paying attention to the track, and went down the wrong switch and into the poles. “OUCH!” cried Thomas, but it was too late – he had already smashed into the poles, and was hit by the live electric wires.” Then Fixer Josh says, “Bust my...

notes.husk.org. Free Parking.
Everyone knows - or should know - about the vast gulf in taxes on petrol/gasoline. Petrol in the UK costs about £1.10 a litre at the moment; the fuel excise duty went up by 2p at the beginning of October. That translate to well over $6.50 a gallon; currently the average US gas price is nearer $2.60. The UK isn’t even the most expensive in Europe. However, there’s another difference that’s less...

Jesus Christ, look at him. If you can’t tell what’s impractical about this costume, you’re either not a guy or don’t live in a place we like to call reality. This bazonkers costume traces back to Codpiece’s even more bazonkers origin story; basically, when this dude was in high school he asked out a girl who rejected him on the grounds that he wasn’t...

This presentation will show the first experimental implementation of an eavesdropper for quantum cryptosystem. Although quantum cryptography has been proven unconditionally secure, by exploiting physical imperfections (detector vulnerability) we have successfully built an intercept-resend attack and demonstrated eavesdropping under realistic conditions on an installed quantum key distribution...

We thought no one could top the celestial missed connection, but we loved this heartfelt tale of a dysfunctional iPod turned love connection at the Apple Store: You liked my broken iPod: I called her Luna Lovegood. I liked the names of your thumb drives: you called them Pegasus and Galactica. When I told you my nano was called Not A Cylon, we had a moment, Apple Genius David…...

Why We Should Be Eating Horses Instead of Riding Them I’m not going to dance around the issue: I hate horses. I hate them. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Horses are kind. Horses are beautiful. Nations have been built on the backs of horses. All that. You haven’t seen the things I’ve seen, however. You haven’t suffered at the hands of...

Is aviation security mostly for show? (Schneier)
Last week’s attempted terror attack on an airplane heading from Amsterdam to Detroit has given rise to a bunch of familiar questions. How did the explosives get past security screening? What steps could be taken to avert similar attacks? Why wasn’t there an air marshal on the flight? And, predictably, government officials have rushed to institute new safety measures to close holes...

'Romeo And Juliet': Just As You Misremembered It :...
We all know the story of Romeo and Juliet … or do we? A new off-Broadway production tells the story of the star-crossed lovers without bothering with any of Shakespeare’s hallowed words or intricate plot twists. Instead, it relies on the fuzzy recollections of people who read it in high school. The show’s creators called unsuspecting people on the phone and asked them what...

Forget that guff about Rage against the Machine vs. X Factor - truly, a herd of independent minds. What’s more worrying is the large number of basic irrationalities contained in popular songs. I was at the gym the other day - this finely chiselled physique doesn’t come naturally - and Alexandra Burke came on the TV, singing “The bad boys are always catching my eye.” Well of course they are....

Vacation '58 by John Hughes
V A C A T I O N ‘5 8  by John Hughes If Dad hadn’t shot Walt Disney in the leg, it would have been our best vacation ever! We were going to Disneyland. It was a dream come true. The rides! Christmas ‘59 by John Hughes All in all it was a pretty exciting Christmas, what with the relatives and the presents and the fun and the cops and Aunt Hazel’s dog blowing up in our living room. The Quiet Danger of Non-Inflation-Adjusted Stock...
In today’s Wall Street Journal, E.S. Browning has written a quietly important article (gated) about the fact that stock-market returns are almost never adjusted for inflation. While most shrewd investors factor in this omission, my sense is that a great many people never think about it, and therefore significantly overestimate their investment gains. As with most things in life, this problem...

Happy Life Day! | The Star Wars Holiday Special
It’s the Star Wars Holiday Special! Things to look out for: Carrie Fisher is far from sober, and it’s a little depressing. Harrison Ford doesn’t want to be there. Mark Hamill talks like a kid’s TV presenter. Chewie’s son is called Lumpy. Oh, and it’s so bad even George Lucas, who had little to do with it, disowns it. This is why he became such a control freak and why we ended up with Episode One...

Sweden's bizarre tradition of watching Donald Duck...
Three years ago, I went to Sweden with my then-girlfriend (now-wife), to meet her family and celebrate my first Christmas. As an only partially lapsed Jew, I was not well-versed in Christmas traditions, and I was completely ignorant of Swedish customs and culture. So I was prepared for surprises. I was not prepared for this: Every year on Dec. 24 at 3 p.m., half of Sweden sits down in front of...
